Privacy and Data Security Questions? Let’s answer them

what

In today’s world of media…or rather media’s world of today, a great thing to know would be how all the information we share is used. Do we have control of what is used? Is there such thing as privacy and data security in media? How can we protect ourselves and others by knowing about it?

this

Data privacy is a part of data security and is related to the proper handling of data – how you collect it, how you use it, and maintaining compliance. Data security is about access and protecting data from unauthorized users through different forms of encryption, key management, and authentication,” says Managed Solution

how

Knowing what these two things are and how to navigate them can help you as an individual, employee and as an employer. There are laws and legislation for each of these issues that can protect you, those who work for you, or with you.

What You Should Consider When Thinking About Geolocation: For a business

what it means to you

Geolocation can be extremely helpful to a business that needs some clout. It can allow a business the ability to target a very specific audience. Geolocation can also be a risky business that will require a lot of homework. A business could lose a large amount of money on wasted ads if targeting the wrong area/wrong people.

what it means to us

Say you’re new to town and don’t know what all is available. Well, geolocation can be a great way the business can reach out to you and make you feel more in the, “know.” On the flip side, geolocation can feel like an invasion of privacy. Strangers using your location to make assumptions about your preferences can be a big turn off.

what it means to me

My thoughts are a long the lines of how far advertising has come and what lines it has crossed. I wonder at what it was like when people just lived -not sold things to live.

As a consumer, I feel constantly bombarded by ads. As a producer, I see that to succeed I must advertise. I wonder what it would be like if we all just took advertising down a notch or two, gave everyone a break, and if we would still need something as inventive (or invasive) as geolocation.

Here, you can learn a little more about geolocation and its ins-and-outs.

Need Help With Social Media Policies?

what

Starting a company calls for a foundation. Knowing your brand voice and keeping it consistent means having guidelines. Those guidelines are enforced with policies. These policies can reach so far as to step into the lives of those who work for the company. That is where social media policies come in.

“A social media policy simply outlines how an organization and its employees should conduct themselves via the web. It helps protect your company’s online reputation”

why

Ultimately, social media policies help prevent misrepresentation.

Here are some other reasons that social media policies are essential.

  • Maintain your brand identity consistently across channels
  • Treat legal and regulatory sensitivities with awareness
  • Prevent a security breach
  • Prevent a full-blown PR crisis
  • Act quickly if a crisis or breach does happen
  • Be upfront with your employees regarding their own social media responsibilities
  • Encourage your employees to own and amplify your brand’s message

how

Social Media policies are different for every company depending on what it is meant to represent. Because of this, it is hard to mimic another company’s policies. Laying this foundation may be daunting, but is absolutely essential for the viability of a company.

Here is a great resource to help get started.

Social Media Management & Measurement

what

Whether you want to be “Insta famous,” or have, “Twitter klout,” you’ll have to put to practice a few things.

who

You have to know where you’re at to get where you’re going. First things first, measurement! You’ll need to find out how far your influence reaches. Check this out https://neilpatel.com/blog/social-media-measurement/ for some help on that.

how

With that information, you’ll find out who you are influencing and who you want to be influencing. This is where management comes in. “Social media management is the process of managing your online interactions and content across social media channels.” These interactions are guided by your brand voice.

As you continue to grow, measurement will be key in finding out the effectiveness of your labor. Knowing where your performance meets expectations and where it doesn’t will allow you to evolve your strategies to meet your goals.

Professionalism Online: What does that look like?

“Professionalism is a frame of mind, not a paycheck”

Cecil Castle

what?

PROFESSIONALISM is the way that we conduct and present ourselves. Often times we find that our online professionalism varies from platform to platform. While our LinkedIn account may be more polished, our facebook and instagram should also maintain the same sense of professionalism. Online professionalism should be portrayed across all platforms to keep a consistent view of who we are.

why?

SUCCESSFUL professionals remain the same person across all platforms. This keeps a sense of parallelism and shows consistency. Did their polished biographies and prim profile pictures alone land them their dream job? No, BUT should it come down to you and someone who has the described platforms, the latter is more likely to be chosen. ‘“A lack of professionalism suggests a lack of respect towards an employer, which can impact your ability to land a job.”’- Ashley Brooks

how?

ACCORDING to an article by Ashley Brooks, there are ways we can ensure our professionalism.

  • Dress in appropriate attire
  • Possess strong communication skills
  • Practice ethical actions
  • Remain calm under stress

IN person and online we should strive to develop and implement these key strategies. With a little consistency and time we will be building our professional network and impressing future employers.

BE mindful. Be original. Be professional. Be you.

Alexandra Grace
